Meet the Captains: Boys Track

Despite the spring athletic seasons being canceled due to COVID-19 precautions, the dedication and leadership exuded by the spring sports captains at Walpole High School will be fully recognized. 

 

Shane Grant

Dave Forester

When did you first begin playing this sport?

Sophomore year.   

 

Do you want to continue this sport in college?

Yes. 

 

If yes, are you committed for this sport? To what school?

Northeastern University. 

 

Who was a prominent coach in your sports career? Why?

Coach Coogan, because he always had good racing advice to offer and was very good at getting us prepared for the bigger stake races.

 

What other activities/clubs are you involved in?

Green Team, Badminton Club.  

 

Who have always been some big opponents/rivals? Why?

Wellesley, because they have some very strong distance runners, and it’s always a close meet between them. 

 

How has this sport impacted you?

Track and Field has helped me learn some valuable life skills such as nothing worth doing is ever easy, and if you work hard you can hit your goals.

 

What is one of your favorite memories of this sport?

Spending time in North Carolina with the SMR team at nationals and winning a national championship with them.

Merrimack College. 

 

Who was a prominent coach in your sports career? Why?

Coach Coogan, because he has always believed in me and been there for me.

 

What other activities/clubs are you involved in?

Football.  

 

Who have always been some big opponents/rivals? Why?

Needham, they always have a strong team.

 

How has this sport impacted you?

It has made me become more competitive and a harder worker.

 

What is one of your favorite memories of this sport?

Winning the D3 indoor championship junior year.

 

Stephen Colleran

Yes.

Boston College. 

 

Who was a prominent coach in your sports career? Why?

Coach Coogan because he taught me everything I know about the sport about how to start and pace myself. He is also the main reason I was able to improve throughout my high school career.

 

What other activities/clubs are you involved in?

I am involved in National Honors Society and also Math Team.  

 

Who have always been some big opponents/rivals? Why?

Needham, because they always are very competitive and are competing with us to win the Herget Championship.

 

How has this sport impacted you?

The sport has allowed me to meet a bunch of new people, and it has allowed me to see myself improving and winning throughout the past four years.

 

What is one of your favorite memories of this sport?

Last year when we won the Divisional State Championship was my favorite memory of track because we were the underdogs going into the meet and ended up winning the entire thing.

 

Edward Khouri

Sophomore year.

No. 

 

Who was a prominent coach in your sports career? Why?

Coach Coogan. He always reminded me that hard work pays off, and he does an excellent job of tailoring to the individual needs of the 70+ kids on the team.

 

What other activities/clubs are you involved in?

Cross Country.  

 

Who have always been some big opponents/rivals? Why?

Needham is always a tough team to face in the dual meet season. Billerica/ Stoughton are also both tough teams in divisionals. 

 

How has this sport impacted you?

The track team feels more like a family. Everyone is included. The team has a great sense of humor but also knows when it’s time to buckle down and get work done. The people who run track are all hard-working, whether it be for a PR or in the classroom. By participating in track, I surrounded myself with a plethora of positive influences.

 

What is one of your favorite memories of this sport?

Winning D3’s our junior year.

Yes. 

 

Who was a prominent coach in your sports career? Why?

Coach Greener has coached me every year of my high school career, and he coached my dad when he went to Walpole High School. 

 

Who have always been some big opponents/rivals? Why?

Needham; during our meets we always had close finishes.

 

How has this sport impacted you?

I feel like it has allowed me to impact some of the underclassmen’s time here at WHS, and I helped to teach them throwing techniques.

 

What is one of your favorite memories of this sport?

Sophomore year finally breaking 40 ft.
