After losing a heart-breaker to Needham 4-3, the Rebels bounced back with a dominating win over the Natick Red and Blue. With that win, the Rebels have improved their record to 8-1-2, placing them atop the Herget Division of the BSL.
Despite the win, the Rebels struggled early on. Natick struck first with an impressive head goal off of a restart. However, the Rebels remained resilient. “We never let one goal discourage us from playing our game,” said junior Captain Nolan Murray, ” we never let up.” The Rebel defense stayed strong in the face of adversity, and Natick could not add to their lead for the rest of the first half.
The Rebel offense came out guns firing in the second half. Senior forward Joey Petruzziello scored his first goal of the season in a second minute goal on a spectacular breakaway. This breakaway was due in part to the spectacular passing ability of the Rebel midfielders, who were able to play a beautiful ball to Petruzziello. Walpole wasn’t done, though. Senior forward Conor Murtagh has had a stellar season as of late. Murtagh has averaged one goal a game this season. Last Thursday’s game was no exception for his breakout year: Murtagh scored two goals in the second half, cementing the Rebel victory with a final score—3-1. “We just hung in there and trusted ourselves to come through when it mattered most,” said Murray.
The Rebels now look to Weymouth, who sport an 8-2-2 record and sit atop the Carey Division of the BSL. “We’ll just look to play our game our way and hopefully that will carry us to victory this Wednesday,” said Murray.
