The energy was high as the Walpole Girls Soccer team hit the turf against Milton for their first night game this month on October 20. After the Rebels beat Milton 2-0 on their home turf on September 22, Milton was out for revenge against the Rebels. With yet another upset, the Rebels captured the lead and kept it for the rest of the game with a final score of 6-1.
A warm, Thursday night brought many fans to the field to cheer on the Rebels to their tenth victory. The Youth Soccer Organization organized this night so that the younger girls were able to see the high school girls play. Any girl that was wearing her soccer uniform got in free to the game. The enthusiasm from the girls and the rest of the crowd must have been a big factor for the girls on the field, who managed to score six goals against one of their biggest rivals.
The first goal was scored in the first minute by freshman Abby McMackin, for her third goal of the season–two of which came against Milton. Already off to a rolling start, the Rebels’ intensity continued with 3 more goals in the first half. Junior Ella McMackin, the team’s leading scorer, scored two goals right over the goalie’s head. Sophomore Lauren Reagan finished one right after McMackin to the bottom right corner. The score was close to being 5-0, when Reagan crossed the ball to senior Sarah Lund, but the ball managed to skip right between her ankles. Deflated and upset about their play, Milton players put their heads down walking off the field after the first half.
Since Milton is one of their biggest rivals, the Rebels did not want to give up their lead. Junior Seana Cofsky scored the fifth goal from outside midfield with a left foot long ball into the right siding of the net–a beautiful goal that hyped up the audience. Dominating most of the game, the Rebels had many more opportunities to score, many of which came from corner kicks. Sophomore Karalyn Kickham got a head on senior Captain Suzy Gallivan’s corner, which was mistakenly finished off into the goal by a Milton player.
With the Rebels’ 6-0 lead, Milton’s aggressiveness picked-up toward the end of the second half. Fouled in the box, Milton’s forward took a penalty kick to bring the score to 6-1 in the last ten minutes—tarnishing the Rebels shut-out.
Milton was Walpole’s only win last year with a 2-1 score, and how big a difference from the blow-out score of 6-1 the Rebels earned this year. After losing to Framingham on October 20, the Rebels are now back on a winning track starting with this the win over Milton. With only three regular season games left until tournament, the season has just begun for the Rebels, compared to this time last year when the season was coming to an end.
