The Walpole Rebel girls lacrosse team made quick work of their Weymouth opponents yesterday, scoring six quick goals in the first eight minutes before Weymouth could put one in themselves. Sticky, persistent defense along with outstanding offensive production catapulted the Lady Rebels to a 20-4 victory.
The Rebels started their domination with an immediate goal thirty seconds into the game by sophomore Sarah Buckley. As if to crush any Weymouth hopes of comeback, junior Shelby Guisti scored again thirty seconds later, with sophomore Cecilia Abely and seniors Kim Gambon and Kellie Sullivan scoring as well. Weymouth finally got on the board with a penalty shot brought about by the tight defense of junior Alicia Tosone. Able to contstantly cover the stick to prevent clean passes, the Rebel defense (consisting of senior Captain Emily Painten, juniors Alicia Tosone and Brooke Waite, and sophomore Kim Walsh rarely allowed the ball to circulate in the Walpole end. Their defense was also complimented by the play of Walpole’s goalie, junior Kayla Cullen, who had three saves on the day.
Following the Weymouth goal, Walpole responded once again with nine more goals, bringing the score up to 15-1 at the half. Goals were scored by junior Michaela Brady, senior Kellie Sullivan, junior Shelby Guisti, sophomore Cecilia Abely, sophomore Sarah Buckley, and junior Kate Lavelle.
The second half gave Walpole a chance to relax and circulate fresh players onto the field, although this did not decrease the scoring. Walpole scored five more goals in the half, put in by juniors Shelby Guisti and Jen Walsh along with senior Captain Molly Haswell. Walpole’s goalie also got a chance to rest and was replaced by sophomore Colleen Driscoll, who racked up three saves as well, matching her upperclassmen counterpart. The production of so many goals can undoubtedly also be attributed to Walpole’s outstanding transition play. Leading the team in assists was sophomore Sarah Buckley, while junior Shelby Guisti led the team in steals.
To sum up this short and succinct match, the Walpole Rebels Girls Lacrosse team “ran show”.
