Laughter is spreading in the Walpole High School drama club. The upcoming play, “The Worst High School Play in the World,” is a comedy about the lost Prince Ivanha, portrayed by senior Luke Witherell, who is left in the forest by his mother, Queen Nina (senior Emma Batting), and sister, Corsicana (junior Jess McNamara). Prince Ivanha is hidden in the hopes of avoiding his evil Uncle Viscera, played by junior Jackie Gately, who wants to rule the kingdom of Saxonia. Viscera takes over the kingdom with help from idiotic magicians and court jesters, while Ivanha is raised by his mama and pop squirrel, played by hilarious sock puppets operated by freshman Ariana Chariton and junior Nick Leppo. Silly duels and running jokes will entertain the entire audience throughout the show.
The performance is actually a play within a play, with appearances throughout by a fake director (sophomore Sarah Wyllie), other clumsy crew, sounds people, a separate narration by Friar Rico (junior Evan Parsons), and Belinda (senior Erin Strickland). These carefully staged and executed errors bring a lighthearted humor to the play that the audiences are sure to enjoy. Sophomore Mike Griffin said, “You can’t help but continue laughing throughout. It’s just funny.” The hard -working cast and tech crew has members ranging from freshmen to seniors in a friendly environment. Sophomore Rory Hardiman said, “Drama (Club) is a great place to make friends.”
“The Worst High School Play in the World” showcases not only the talents of the actors and actresses, but the Drama Club’s Tech and Prop crew as well. Sound cues need to be exact in order to be funny with the actors’ lines, which keeps the Technology Crew on its feet. The Prop Crew works hard to gather everything the cast needs and get it on stage at exactly the right moment.
The Walpole High School Drama Club puts hours of hard work in rehearsals for “The Worst High School Play in the World”. Its silly jokes and characters will have the entire audience laughing along. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, from sock puppets to action filled duels. Be sure to check out the Walpole High School Drama Club production of “The Worst High School Play in the World” Friday December 2 and 3 at 7:30 for a night full of entertainment and laughs.
