5. Football’s last minute win over Natick – In an instant classic, the football team battled a strong Natick team for the Bay State League Herget title and a playoff berth. The game came down to the wire and sophomore kicker Colton Mitchell hit the game winning field goal to propel the Rebels to the postseason.
4. Porkers undefeated regular season – The Porkers followed up their only perfect regular season in 2010 with another perfect regular season. The Porkers hit a snag in the playoffs, though, as they lost 2-0 to Duxbury in the South Sectional Finals and extended their drought of a State Championship to five years.
3. Ganshirt and Cross Country team breaks records – Senior Zach Ganshirt and the Cross Country team had a season to remember in 2011. Ganshirt broke the course record for Walpole High and the team beat Newton North for the first time in 15 years. The runners finished the season with a 10-2 record.
2. Swimming and Diving overcomes obstacles – This year the Rebels decided to move up to Division 1 and in doing so, allowed two senior boys the chance to score points for their team. Despite much criticism from opposing players, parents, and even talk show hosts, the Swimming and Diving team had another undefeated regular season with the help of the boys. The team finished second in conferences, third in the South Sectional meet, and sixth in the State Meet.
1. Mike Tempesta ’11 on senior night – Playing against rival Norwood and with the recent passing of his father still lingering in his mind, senior Captain Mike Tempesta put up one of the best basketball performances Walpole High has ever seen. After a standing ovation from Norwood and Walpole fans, Tempesta was unstoppable as he put up 31 points and 4 assists, with six three-pointers. The full article on the game can be seen here.
