The Rebels proved how far they have come since the beginning of the season, showing off their extraordinary skills in distance, sprinting, jumping and throwing against the Dedham Marauders. Their impressive 88-48 victory over Dedham left their season record at 4-2-1 – a great improvement from previous years. Thinking back on the overall season, Coach Conor Cashman said, “It has been the best season yet. The team has grown in size, talent, and spirit.”
As usual, the meet started out with the two mile in which the sophomore duo of Kathryn Russo (13:04) and Grace Lynch (13:04.5) came in first and second, with almost identical times. Senior Amanda Murphy came in third to complete the sweep of the two mile with a time of 13:42. This meet was nothing new for junior Erica Hawley (16.0), who came in first once again in the 100 meter hurdles. Sophomore Amanda Carney snagged second place in the 100 meter dash in 14.2 seconds. Distance continued to dominate their events as well by sweeping the one mile. Sophomore Courtney Shea (5:45) finished the race first and was followed by senior captains Diana Wiseman (5:46) and Olivia Perry (6:03). The 4×1 team (consisting of Andrea Zoppo, Amanda Carney, Jacey Dold, and Caroline Malone) won their race by a considerable amount to further the score’s margin.
The field events were also dominated by the Rebels. Hawley (5’2) and junior Andrea Zoppo (4’6) came in first and third in the high jump. In the triple jump, once again, Hawley came in first and Carney came in third. Carney was the only Rebel who placed in the long jump, getting 13’4. Walpole won six of the possible nine places in all of the throwing events. Winning both first and second place, sophomore Kristan Papirio (106’7) and junior Jacey Dold dominated the javelin. In discus, Papirio (69’) placed again for third, while senior Nora Feeney (75’6) came in second. Junior Katie Brady threw 27’ to place first in shot put while sophomore My’lissa Hope threw 26’2 to place third.
In the mid-distance events, junior Kelly Burke (65.4) and freshman Amanda Dimartino (67.2) raced across the finish line and scored first and second place in the 400 meters. In the 800, sophomore Brigette Lawton (2:31.2) and senior Allie Memmo (2:37) also finished first and second. The 4×4 relay team ended the regular season on a good note, coming in first with a time of 4:38.7 to ensure that the last dual meet would end in favor of Walpole.
Although the regular season is over, the Rebels still need to set their sights on the post season consisting of a relay meet on Saturday May 16, the Bay State League meet on Tuesday May 19, and the state meet on May 29. The girls ended third in the Herget division and have a good chance at doing well in the League meet and the State meet. Coach Conor Cashman reflected on the overall record and season saying, “Ideally I did not want a tie against Framingham. A record of 5-2 or 6-1 would have been better, but I’m really proud of the girls.”
