The Rebel Boys Track Team defeated Dedham with a score of 77-18 on Thursday, December 22. Although Dedham is not the strongest team in the league, the Rebels did not take them lightly. They fought Dedham with the same perseverance as they do other teams, to keep their undefeated record and gain their second win of the season.  After the meet, Head Coach Kevin Butera said, “I was pleased that so many of our athletes were motivated to perform at a high level.”

Both the sophomore and senior class long distance runners did extremely well finishing first in their events. Sophomores Anthony DiVirgilio won the 1 mile with a time of 4:53, Jon Kelland won the 100m with a P.R. of 2:54.86, and Mike Vander Linden won the 2 mile with a P.R. of 11:12.85. Seniors Bryan Rockwood and Zach Ganshirt continued their successful season winning their respective races. They both got P.R.’s; Rockwood ran a 38.59 in the 300m and Ganshirt ran a 1:27.18 in the 600m.

Many other runners finished first place in other events, including senior Conor Murtagh, who scored 15 points for the Rebels with three first place finishes in the 55m hurdles, the long jump, and the high jump.  Both the long jump and high jump were P.R.’s for Murtagh—19’1.5 and  5’7”.  Murtagh has proven he is more than just a soccer all-star by beating out all the top competitors in this meet. Also, senior Shane Blass ran a P.R. of 6.95 in the 55m dash, earning five points for the team.

There were many second place finishers that contributed to the Rebel’s point total as well. Second place finishers included, seniors Andrew Berardinelli in the 1000m and Feast Conley in the 600m, juniors Winston Ho in the 300m, Will Whearty in the 2 Mile, Mike Habib in the 55 m HH, and Connor McCarthy in the 55m and the long jump. Also, recognizable P.R.’s came from junior Jungwoo Yoon in the 300 (41.40) and sophomore Alex Fraser in the 2 mile (11:48.63).

Although the Rebels more than quadrupled Dedham’s score, they cannot get too comfortable with this blowout win because up next, on January 12, is Milton. The Milton meet will be a challenge for the Rebels because Milton recently beat a very strong and fast Wellesley team. The Rebels have utilized the long winter break  to physically and mentally prepare for the Milton meet—a meet that if they win will name them Herget Champions.
