- A 1000 runner speeds ahead to take first for Walpole.
After two consecutive wins, the Walpole Girls Indoor Track Team improved their record to 3-1 by defeating their archrival, Norwood. The end result was 75-15, the girls were able to sweep 6 events and achieve the challenge from Coach Conor Cashman of reaching 20 PRs.
In the distance events, the girls were able to sweep all four events. Starting with the mile junior Megan Peterson PR’d and placed first with a time of 5:56. Following Peterson, sophomore Ashley Waldron finished second and also PR’d with a time of 6:02. To sweep the event, freshman Lucy Lynch finished in third and PR’d with the time of 6:06. Continuing the girls’ success in the 1000, both senior Joanna Garry and junior Micaela Barry PR’d as they achieved times of 3:36 and 3:38. Garry and Barry completed the race in second and third. Leading the girls to PR was sophomore Kristen Coyne, who was running the 1000 for the first time, came in first with a time of 3:29. In the 600, sophomore Gabbi Petruzziello ran an impressive race to finish first and PR with a time of 1:52. A second behind Petruzziello, sophomore Michele Lucas scored her first varsity points of the season finishing in second and prd with a time of 1:53. To sweep the event, sophomore Megan Jenkins also scored her first varsity points and PR’d with a time of 1:54. In the two mile, sophomore Gina Conti ran the race for her first time and was able to qualify for states with a time of 12:22 and finished in first for the Rebels. Following Conti, senior Christina Freiberger finished in second with a PR reaching the time of 12:59. Freshmen Lauren Hirshom also ran the two mile for the first time and was able to finish in third with a time of 13:39.
The girls were able to sweep the 300 meter race as well. Leading the 300, senior Erin McCarthy was able to finish in first with a PR of 43.08. Junior Maddy Shea ran the 300 for the first time after coming back from an injury in which she performed stunningly well and placed second for her team. Junior Christina Tobin finished in third to sweep the event. In the 55 meter hurdles, junior Nicole Browne finished in first for the Rebels. Senior Rebecca Goula finished in second and junior Seana Cofsky finished in third.
For the upcoming meet this Thursday, Coach Cashman wants the girls to defeat Wellesley after they have been undefeated by Walpole for 20 or so years. To finish second in the Herget Division, the Rebels must defeat Wellesley.
