Celtics vs Spurs Saturday 1/21/12 at Elm St 4:00-5:00
The great thing about WYBA High School Rec League is no matter what game you go to, it is always going to be an entertaining matchup no matter who is playing. However, this week this week the most promising game is the undefeated Celtics take on the one-loss Spurs.
After defeating both the 76ers (3-1) and Wizards (3-1) by double digits, the Celtics are confident going into this weekend. “We feel like the strongest team in league this year and if we just play our game our way, we’ll come out on top,” says Drew Stanton, a junior at Walpole High School. Big D is a force on the boards and proves to be touble for any opponent when he is in the game. Stanton isn’t the only scoring threat for the Cetics, though. Bill Rockwood, a junior at Walpole High School, will keep the Spurs honest with his strong long range game. Rockwood, definitely one of the strongest 3-point shooters in the league, can pose some serious problems for the Spurs on Saturday. However, senior Dan King is certainly the player on the court to watch. King can do it all: shoot the three, score in the paint, and defend almost anybody.
On the opposite side, the Spurs walk on their court with their big three: Matt Lavanchy, Mike Kavolius, and Tyler Creighton. Lavanchy is a quick, intelligent guard who runs the fast-break to perfection. Kavolius is an equally talented player on both offense and defense. He will be a handful for anyone who covers him on Saturday. Creighton is a rebound machine that dominates the paint with an iron fist. In addition, the Spurs’s Peter Bruen provides a good compliment at the guard position to Matt Lavanchy.
Without a doubt, this matchup is one of the most anticipated games of the season. Tensions will run high and coaches Eric Kraus (Celtics) and Joe Weinacht (Spurs) will have to do everything they can to lead their teams to victory.
