Freshman Summer King has been a major contributor in the varsity girls basketball team’s successful season. With an outstanding 173 points in her first 14 career varsity basketball appearances, King is helping to lead the team to their terrific 13-3 record. Not only is King dominating on the offensive end, but she conributes on the defensive end as well. With her 6 foot stature, her ability to block shots and grab rebounds is unmatched.
King has made the transition look easy from laid back travel to this high tempo game play. “The competition in AAU has helped me prepare for the speed at a higher level”, said King on how she got ready for her first season at Walpole High. “She has done an amazing job adjusting, which I attribute to Summer being a mature and intelligent student athlete, as well as the team really taking her in and making her feel a part of the team” said coach Stacy Bilodeau with regards to King’s seamless transition.
Being the only Freshman on the team, Summer was a bit apprehensive coming into preseason not knowing what to expect. “It was really scary at first. I wasn’t sure of how I was going to fit in with the rest of the team because they all played together last year,” said King. “We are very happy to have her as an addition to our team this year” said senior Captain Shannon Cullen. Summer has fit perfectly into the roster – and has even earned herself a starting position.
Not only is King a dominate force on the basketball court, but also on the volleyball floor this past fall. King was also the only freshman on the varsity girls volleyball team. Prior to this year, Summer had never competitively played volleyball, which proves what excellent athlete she really is.
Besides sports, King enjoys reading and hanging out with her friends. She is an excellent student, and finds no trouble in balancing her school work with her athletics. Upon a first meeting, she may seem a little shy, but in reality she is a very aspiring and determined young athlete.
King considers herself to be a very ambitious girl who likes to try new things.
“As for the future, my goals are to help Walpole win another state championship, as well as improve on my individual and team game” said King. All of Walpole hopes she can complete that goal and bring the state championship back.
