In a battle of the Herget frontrunners, the Norwood Girls Hockey team traveled to Iorio Arena on Wednesday, February 15, to take on the high-powered Girls Hockey team of Walpole High. Before the game started, the two seniors on the team – Captain Cori Donahue and Nicole Lazzaro – were honored for their four years of hard work and dedication. In addition to celebrating the achievements of the players, their parents were honored for their sacrifices as well. When the pregame pagentry ended, the Rebels were all business.
Sophomore defenseman Delaney Harrop got the scoring started when she put a shot in after a nice pass from freshman Olivia Knight. Within the first three minutes, Walpole jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. About a minute and a half later, sophomore defenseman Brooke Matherson added a goal of her own, this time unassisted. The Mustangs were almost able to even the game when they had a 5-on-3 opportunity, but the expert penalty kill of Walpole thwarted any Norwood attempts. Just before the first period ended, Donahue added another for Walpole, pushing their lead to 3-0 into the first intermission.
Norwood came out strong in the second and were beginning to even out the game when sophomore defenseman Shannon Gillis scored from the point. The Rebels would not roll over so easily though, and a minute later freshman Maddie Torgerson scored an unassisted goal to make the score 4-1 in Walpole’s favor as the third period began. Freshman Olivia Knight added a goal of her own to the Rebel lead to secure a 5-1 Walpole win. The win gave the Rebels the outright Herget Division title and some nice momentum going into the playoffs.
