The JV football game on Sep. 28 started off with a bang. On the second play of the game quarterback Tom Donnellan hit a 60 yard bomb to wideout Steve King, who shaked and baked through several Newton North defenders. This long ball helped to propel the Rebel’s opening drive which ended in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Donnellan to Jeff Meaney. After Tim Crowley’s extra-point the score was 7-0, with Walpole in the lead. But the Newton North Tigers had an answer. The Tigers offense stepped up and ran all over the Walpole defense. At the start of the second quarter Newton North got the ball at their own 10. They moved down the field methodically and topped off the drive with 10 yard tocuhdown pass. Following a two-point conversion by the Tigers the score was 8-7. Donnellan was intercepted on the next drive. This gave the Tigers the ball on the Rebel’s 30 yard line. Newton North capitalized on the excellent field position by having a 25 yard touchdown run. Another two-point conversion made the score 16-7 going into halftime. The Tigers came back after the half and had a great return. They went back to the same, persistent running game and it worked. Newton North scored from a 3 yard run, after an almost goal-line stand by the Rebels defense. Their two-point conversion was no good so this left the score 22-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter. When Walpole got the ball back, the offense finally clicked. Ditching the Ace formation, the Rebels went into Pro formation and just starting running the ball down the Tiger’s throats. With help from the offensive line and running backs Mike Baryski and Sean Jameson, the Rebels marched down the field and scored from an 8 yard touchdown pass from Donnellan to Meaney. King caught the two-point conversion pass which made the score a tight 22-15 at the end of three quarters. Newton North answered again with a great kick return which set up a 2 yard run for a touchdown and an extra-point. 29-15 was the score, and that is how it would stay. With four minutes left in the game the Rebels got the ball on their own 30, but couldn’t get a good drive going. The final score was Newton North 29 – Walpole 15. Walpole faces the Wellesley Raiders next.
