The Rebels swimming team swam against the Newton North Tigers Friday October 2 in Newton. Walpole showed up to Newton’s home pool thirsty for another win to add to their 5-0 record. (COMBINE THESE FIRST TWO SENTENCES) The Rebels had been preparing for the meet all week, knowing Newton would be a tough team to beat. A 200 Medley Relay including Sophomores Becky Idman, Samantha Pomer, and Jenna Harrop along with senior captain Courtney Pomer swam ahead early and gained a first place win for the Rebels. Jenna Harrop quickly prepared for the next event, the 200 freestyle, and dove back in for another race no more than five minutes after the Medley. Harrop took first place, while freshman Krissy Jankowski and sophomore Kelly McGovern finished fourth and fifth. By the diving break in the middle of the meet the Rebels had gained a big lead, and the Rebels were quickly declawing the Tigers of a possible win. Becky Idman swam in a first place in the 200 IM, while sisters Sam Pomer and Courtney Pomer went first and third in the 50 freestyle. Senior captain Courtney Shea also racked up points for the Rebels with a fourth place in the 50 freestyle.
The diving break gave the Rebels a chance to rejuvenate before the next half of the meet. Jenna Harrop and Christine Drogan started off the second half with Harrop giving Walpole another first in the 100 butterfly, and Drogan contributing with a third place. Another first place win was secured by junior captain Meaghan Smith in the 100 freestyle. Courtney Pomer and Courtney Shea got third and fifth place in the event as well. Freshmen Emily Muller and Krissy Jankowski swam the 500 freestyle as well as sophomore Rachel Williams. Muller placed first while Williams and Jankowski placed third and fifth. The 200 freestyle relay put an end to the Rebels winning streak as Meaghan Smith, Courtney Shea, Krissy Jankowski, and Courtney Pomer took second and the Tigers placed first. The Rebels revived their winning ways as the end of the meet neared with the last three events: 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and the 400 freestyle relay. Becky Idman placed first in the 100 back, with Erin Myers and Meaghan Smith close behind. Sam Pomer placed first in the 100 breaststroke. Rachel Williams and Emily Muller also scored points for the Rebels in the breaststroke. The Rebels 400 freestyle relay consisting of Jenna Harrop, Becky Idman, Meaghan Smith, and Sam Pomer placed first in the last event of the evening, and brought the meet to a close, with the Rebels defeating the Tigers 103-81.
