The Walpole vs. Wellesley game was a defensive show. Both defenses were on their game and it showed. At the end of the first quarter the game was still 0-0. Mid-way through the second quarter the Rebels offense finally started clicking on all cylinders. Slowly driving down the field with a few quick passes by quarterback Tom Donnellan, and some bruising runs by running back Kevin Hickey. The drive ended with a four yard touchdown run by Hickey. With the extra point the score going into halftime was 7-0, Walpole leading. Throughout the game the teams were hitting hard and fighting for every inch. One player suffered a concussion and had to be taken off in an ambulance. The Raiders came out looking to run the ball hard in the second half. They kept running options and dives which tore up the Rebels D. Wellesley found the edge near the goal line and punched it in. Their attempt at a two-point conversion was stopped by a big sack by Hickey. On the ensuing kickoff, returner Nick Foley returned the kick for a 91 yard touchdown which changed up the tempo of the game. The extra point was no good so the score going into the fourth quarter was 13-6, Walpole still on top. Again defense took over the game until late in the fourth when the Wellesley offense drove down the field again and picked up another touchdown. The play of the game was when the Raiders two-point conversion was stopped by nosetackle Mike Hebner. The Rebels got the ball back and ran out the clock. Even though Walpole dominated the whole game, the last few minutes turned it into a nail-biter. The final score was Walpole 13, Wellesley 12.
