Foxboro Reconsidering Casino Proposal

Proposed Foxboro Casino

Proposed Foxboro Casino and Resort.

Many believe the debate over the Foxboro casino is done and over with. Unfortunately, an abundant amount of people are wrong.  Even though there was a 3-2 vote against the casino proposal in December, a possible change in office will cause the board to review the proposal.  On May 7, Foxboro has their elections for the town committee.  According to a recent bCasino review, there are two pro-casino candidates running against two anti-casino candidates.  If the pro-casino applicants win the election, it is likely that they will form a negotiating committee and move forward with the casino process.

Moving forward with this plan will not only affect Foxboro, but also surrounding communities.  The consequences of this casino will cause a long-term impact on education, law enforcement, and career growth. Building a casino would cause new workers and their families to move closer to Foxboro, increasing already large class sizes. Tinkering with education will only result badly for the students. Copious amounts of students in classes limits their one on one time with teachers for extra help during school.  Therefore the  idea of building a casino in Foxboro will ultimately end up hurting the district, especially the younger generations.

In order to please the majority of the community, Robert Kraft said that he would not make the parking lot across from Patriot Place into a casino. Instead, he would build a bridge for pedestrians that connects Patriots Place to the additional retail stores, spa, and gambling room across the highway.  The room would consist of slot machines and table games. This new plan is estimated to bring in between $10 million and $15 million a year in tax revenue from the project for the town. However, the additional stores and a spa are not required, considering that there are 60 plus stores as well as a hotel and spa across the street.

Furthermore, Steven Wynn, a popular casino owner, has brainstormed a new idea to persuade local voters.  Instead of the temporary public skating rink during the winter, he would establish one that is usable year-round.  The formation of an ice-skating rink does not do much for the community. This will not  be useful or needed because almost every bordering town has their own rinks.

It is possible that instead of installing a casino or gambling machines on Route 1 across from the stadium, slot machine gambling will be brought to Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville, only about 5.5 miles away.

Even with this potential sum of money going towards the town, there is no need for a casino in Foxboro. Casinos normally aid towns with low income, which is not a title that applies to Foxboro. The insertion of a casino will create a significant increase of crime in Foxboro.  Violence and drunk driving will both be consequences of this project.  The hometown of the Patriots, as well as surrounding towns will suffer the repercussions of the proposed casino.  It is a fact that casinos steal commerce away from local businesses.  In this way, the casino may employ workers, decreasing the unemployment rate briefly, which is already considerably low.   Eventually, it will put many small companies out of business, therefore ultimately increasing the unemployment rate.  Foxboro is not a town in need, thus the design of a casino is not worth it.
