On Monday April 9, Walpole High School Girls Varsity team played Natick High School in a well played game. Walpole got a win out of that game making their record 1-1.
During Walpole’s first up to bat Junior, Bridget Nicholson was hit by a pitch allowing her to take first base. Third up to bat was Junior, Lauren Bodin who was walked by the Natick pitcher. Junior, Sam McChesney was also able to get on base with a grounder. With bases loaded Sophmore, Mikayla Songin got up to the plate hitting a fly ball which dropped into right field causing two runs to score.
With sophomore, Mehron Hoag pitching, Walpole was able to hold Natick for three innings. Senior, Katie Cavaca; Nicholson; and Hoag all successfully caught well hit line drives preventing them from entering the outfield. In the three innings Natick was only able to get two hits off of Hoag. The infield was able to successfully get to mostly all of the pop flys, line drives and grounders hit.
During the top of the fourth inning a Natick batter hit the ball into the middle of left and center field letting the fast runner to make it home for a home-run. The score was now 2-1. With some errors in the field Natick was then able to tie it up.
In the bottom of the fourth inning McChesney stepped into the batter’s box and was hit by a pitch. This was the Natick’s pitchers second time hitting a batter with a pitch in the game. The Natick pitcher then followed up with three wild pitches allowing McChesney to steal second, third then home giving Walpole the lead again.
Walpole was able to keep their lead during Natick’s up to bat. When it came time for Walpole to hit again, Walpole was able to secure their lead with Junior, Jess Cochrane hitting a well placed ball into center field which dropped. Once she was on base she stole bases on wild pitchers to reach home. Sophomore, Casey Songin and Junior, Kelsey Flanagan both got walked and got home on hits from Nicholson, Cavaca and Bodin. The final score was 6-2 with a Walpole victory.
