The Walpole Rebels Boys Lacrosse team dropped their third straight loss of the season on a hot Saturday noontime game against King Phillip High School, 6-8. With the loss on Saturday, the Rebels drop to 2-5 on the season.
The game really did not have any dominating play on either side, as both sides battled back and forth for the entire game. Both the first half and the second half of this highly contested battle contained several goals on both sides, with neither team’s defense able to stop the opposition. In the first half, three goals from freshman star Seamus Ford and senior Captain Bryan Rockwood – a model of consistency for the entire team – kept the Rebels in the game with enough goals to combat King Phillip’s five. As the halftime whistle sounded, the Rebels had some work to do, down 5-3 to a less-than-talented King Phillip team. “We were facing an uphill battle, but we fought hard, and that’s all you can do,” said junior Steve Thulin.
As the second half progressed, both teams remained locked into the pace of the previous half, with King Phillip always just a step or two ahead of their Rebel opposition. Three more goals from Walpole’s mainstay scoring threats, such as sophomores Sean Donnelly and Patrick Baker, was not enough to mount a comeback for the Rebels, as King Phillip was able to score three more goals of their own to preserve their first half lead. A valient second half effort was not enough for the Rebels, as they fell to King Phillip by a score of 8-6.
Despite their dismal record Walpole remains in second place in the Herget Division of the Bay State League behind a 5-2 Wellesley squad, as their record against BSL teams in 2-0. Walpole is now looking to their Wednesday evening, April 25, matchup against Newton North (3-2). After losing three straight, the Rebels are hoping for a big win. “As long as we play our game and continue to do the little things well, we’ll come out on top,” said Rockwood.
