Walpole faced off against Newton-North on April 18, the number one girls track team in the state. The Rebels lost 45-91 to the Tigers’ however, obtained 19 PRs over the course of the meet.
Distance had a strong day with junior Megan Peterson placing third with a time of 12:26.9, one second away from qualifying for states. The Rebels had their only first place on the track in the mile. Sophomore Gina Conti placed first with a time of 5:21 edging Newton North’s number one distance girl, Evie Heffernan. Conti is now ranked number one in the Bay State League with her five second PR. Also, she is ranked 4th in the state with Heffernan right behind her. Another successful race was the 800 with 3 out of the 5 girls accomplishing a PR. Gabbi Petruzziello placed third in the 800 against Newton North’s Meghan Bellerose, who is number one in the state with a 2:17. Petruzziello was only one second away from qualifying with a PR of 2:30.
Sprinting was also strong that day, with junior Maddy Shea as the high point scorer. Shea took second place in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, scoring 9 points. Additionally, she placed second in her field event, long jump, reaching 16’5.5”. Junior Nicole Brown placed third in high jump, reaching 4’9″. Other point scorers included senior Steph DeSantis and senior Suzy Gallivan who took second and third place in the 400 meter dash. Also, in the 400 meter hurdles senior Jacqui Conley placed third. Field events had a high number of girls place in their events. In shot put, discus, and javelin Walpole girls DeSantis, Natalie Doyle, and Michelle Monahan took first place. Doyle also got a PR and threw 27′ 10.5″. Additionally, Sophomore Ana Orfanidis placed third in shot put throwing 25′ 2.5″. In the javelin event, Gallivan, junior Emma Comiskey, and freshman Katie Greulich all PR-ed to throw over 69 feet.
All in all, Newton-North proved to be tough competition for the Walpole Rebels. Although the loss did not help the girl’s record, scoring that many points against Newton-North is a difficult feat. The Walpole girls hope to break their losing streak and win the last three meets of their season.
