Every year for US History I Honors, Mrs. Tobey assigns her students to a community service project, and she puts no restrictions as to how big the projects can become. Three students, junior Astrid Warny and sophomores Catherine Murphy and Pat Connell, have decided to produce a four kilometer road race around Swan Pond. All the proceeds will be sent to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to fund research for pancreatic cancer. The project is entitled Pounding the Pavement for Paula and is scheduled to operate on May 5. The race has been given its name in honor of Murphy’s grandmother, Paula,  whom has recently died from pancreatic cancer.

Several ideas have been going into motion for the upcoming event, such as free t-shirts for the first 125 people to sign up. The shirts are purple because it is the color to represent pancreatic cancer, in the same fashion as pink represents breast cancer. More is planned for the day of the race than the race itself, such as raffles and a banquet at the Swan Pond Clubhouse for afterwards. There will also be prizes, giftcards to Olympia Sports, for the top runners.

To sign up as a runner or walker, one can download the form and bring it to the race, email the information to [email protected] and bring the money to the race, or  just sign up there on the event day. If someone wants to help out but not run, they could contact the above address and ask to volunteer in aiding the operation run smoothly, or they could just donate anything that seems fit. So far, over $1300 have been raised, but any more donations would always be much appreciated.
