On April 16, the Girls Varsity Softball team played one of the top five high school teams in the state, Bridgewater-Raynham, in a close game. Walpole put up a fight and only surrendered four runs. The final score, though, was 3-1 in favor of Bridgewater-Raynham.
The Bridgewater-Raynham pitcher was giving the Walpole batters some trouble in the first 4 innings. With seven strikeouts and the Bridgewater-Raynham infield playing exceptionally, Walpole could not get on base.
Sophomore Stephanie Sem was also giving Bridgewater-Raynham’s batters a difficult time at the plate as well. For the first three innings, Sem and the Rebels infield were able to hold Bridgewater-Raynham to no hits. Sem was averaging one strikeout per inning against the hot bats of Bridgewater-Raynham.
With the score being tied at 0-0, a Bridgewater-Raynham batter stepped into the batter’s box and hit a fly ball over the fence. This homerun woke up Bridgewater-Raynham’s bats, but Walpole’s outfield – including sophomore Lauren Regan and junior Britney McGraw – made some key catches to keep the score at 1-0.
By the fifth inning, Walpole was able to break the Bridgewater-Raynham’s pitcher’s no hitter. Senior Captain Katie Cavaca and junior Sam McChesney both got hits allowing the Rebels to have a runner on second and third base. However, Bridgewater-Raynham’s pitcher and fielders buckled down and did not allow any runs to score. The next batters for Bridgewater-Raynham were powerhouses as they got solid hits that the Walpole infield had trouble fielding.
With the score now 3-0, the Rebels got up for their last chance to score. Junior Lauren Bodin was walked. Through a series of hits by Walpole batters Bodin made it home; making the score 3-1. Bridgewater-Raynham’s pitcher shut down the last two Walpole batters getting two strikouts to end the game.
