A showdown between two age-old rivals turned out to be a great weekend for Rebel football fans.  The freshmen won 18 -7 , the varsity won 32-14 , and now it was the JV’s turn to wrap up the weekend with a sweep of Walpole’s biggest rival – Norwood.  On Monday, Oct. 19 the final meeting between the two teams for the season was held at Turco Field.  During the first quarter both defenses sent a message by stopping every offensive drive, but once the second quarter began things changed.  The Rebels offense gained some traction and starting rolling when sophomore quarterback Tom Donnellan connected with sophomore tight-end Mike Baryski on a 30 yard pitch-and-catch.  Filling in for junior Tim Crowley, sophomore, novice-kicker Mike Hebner missed his first attempt in his career at an extra-point, making the score 6-0 with plenty of time left in the second period.  The Rebels defense shut down the Norwood offense, forcing another three-and-out for the ‘Stangs.  After a sub-par punt, Walpole got the ball on the Norwood 40 and capitalized on this excellent field position.  On the second play of the drive Donnellan fired a rocket to junior wide-out Nick Foley for another touchdown, this one a 40 yarder.  Hebner’s kick got blocked keeping the score at 12-0.  After halftime the rest of the game was all Big Blue.  Defense was the name of the game and Walpole’s certainly did step up in the second half.  Walpole’s corners shut down the Mustangs wide-outs causing Norwood to run the ball straight into an impressive linebacker core, anchored by juniors Kevin Hickey and Darius Benders.  Late in the third quarter the Mustangs were on the Walpole 3 yard line and knocking on the door for a touchdown.  The Rebels never let them come in.  For all four downs the Walpole defense thwarted any offensive attack the ‘Stangs threw at them, forcing a turnover on downs.  But the Norwood D stepped up as well, shutting down the running attack of the Rebels for the rest of the game.  The game would continue to be a defensive stuggle right until the end, when a last minute Norwood drive almost spelled “comeback” for the Mustangs.  But the defensive backs – sophomore Sean Jameson and junior Alex Lee – denied any chance of a Norwood comeback.  The final score was Walpole 12, Norwood 0.  The Rebels (3-2) head out to face the Marauders of Dedham next.
