The National Honor Society started a tutoring program on April 23rd that allows members to help students in need of extra help with school. In the attendance office, tutoring will be available from 2:20 to 3:20 from Monday through Thursday. The program provides a variety of subjects that student tutors can help others in.
Over the years many students have struggled with subjects in certain areas but hesitate to ask teachers for help. Teachers have numerous classes and can only give one on one help occasionally. The tutoring lab is comforting to students who work better with kids their own age and gives them a chance to succeed by providing an hour of help each day. Also, the tutoring program covers the majority of subjects that can appeal to all grade levels. “The tutoring program is a great way to help students,” said junior Allison Russo “I think the program will get more popular when people realize it is here to stay.”
Everyday, two to three tutors are available to help in subjects that vary according to the schedule. Students can find the schedule outside the attendance office and the tutoring proceeds inside each day. All tutors are members of the National Honors Society–a recognition program for high school students who excel academically– and consist of only juniors and seniors. Students in need of help can walk-in on the desired subject day to be tutored with no need of signing up. The program is not forcing students to attend but is available for students to utilize at their own will.
The program allows NHS members to help out piers at Walpole High and benefit students with areas of difficulty. So far the program has helped two students in the first week and offers eleven different tutors. There are high hopes for this program to pick up steam in the remainder of the school year.
