As anticipated season finales air, viewers await to hear the fates of their favorite television shows. While the majority of programs have been renewed and set for next fall, some have not been so lucky. As the 2011-2012 season of shows end, viewers must say a permanent goodbye to some television series that will not be returning next season.
On the CBS network, the vast majority of shows will be retuning for another season. However, “How to be a Gentleman,” a comedy that has already switched times slots several times this season, was the first to be officially cancelled. After their first seasons, fantasy-drama “A Gifted Man” and comedy “Rob” have also been terminated after viewership decreased all year. Poppy Montgomoery’s drama “Unforgettable” will not be returning for a second season after it failed to capture viewer interest. The only long-running program that will not be returning is “CSI:Miami”, which finished its ninth season this April. The drama, starring David Carruso, is the first of the three CSI shows to be ended.
On ABC, fewer programs faired so well with ratings and will not be returning for another season as a result. Comedies “Work it and” “Man up” have both been cancelled after premiering in 2011 . After nine seasons, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” has also been ended, but it will occasionally schedule specials to premiere on the network. Long-running hit drama “Desperate Housewives” will also finish with its season finale, which disappoints but does not shock viewers; for the announcement to cancel was made at the beginning of the year. The new “Charlie’s Angels,” a modern take on the old drama, ran on the network in fall 2011, but was cancelled after just a few episodes. Courtney Cox’s newest comedy “Cougar Town”, which received lower ratings than in its previous two seasons, was not renewed by ABC but will be returning next fall on TBS.
Many shows on Fox network have also been booted from next season. Steven Spielberg’s high-budget scifi “Terra Nova” will not be airing a second season on Fox. “Allen Gregory,” an animated comedy featuring the voice of Jonah Hill, has been cancelled after its premiere season. Hart Hanson’s second Fox series “The Finder” has been much less successful than his first series, “Bones”, and will be ending after one season. Also on the list of cancelled series are family comedy “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” and workplace comedy “Breaking In”. Crime-Drama “Alcatraz” is cancelled after receiving low ratings this season as well. Long-running medical drama “House” will not be returning next fall, either. Announcing this much earlier in the season, Fox has arranged a thrilling series finale for “House”.
With many long-running shows ending this season, it will be difficult for fans to see many of their beloved programs go. Although having a favorite TV show end can be upsetting, these empty spots in a network’s tight schedules leave room for new shows to premiere next season. Hopefully, as people say goodbye to some of their favorites this year, they will also be able to say hello to new favorites to come in the 2012-2013 season.
