Today, Baseball and Softball are scheduled to play, however the weather conditions once again pose problems for these games, possibly leading to further postponement. Track and Field has four athletes scheduled to compete on Tuesday, June 5. Also, Girls Lacrosse lost to Needham on Saturday June 2, ending their tournament journey. After losing a coin-flip for the overall top seed to Franklin, the Walpole Baseball Team (Ranked #2) will be playing in the first round against Xaverian High School (ranked #15). If they had won the coin-flip, they would have been playing the winner of the Attleboro (#16) and Dartmouth (#17) game. Unfortunately for Walpole, many baseball commentators believe the Xaverian Baseball Team, despite being officially ranked #15, are underranked because although they have a worse record than Walpole, the Catholic Conference is a much deeper league than than the Bay State Conference. Coach Bill Tompkins, after winning his 500th game this year, will be tested immediately in a game where ESPN writer Brendan Hall has identified Walpole as a top seed most likely to get upset. The game, which has been previously postponed due to rain on Saturday, is to be played Today at 4pm. However, the weather today is not looking much different, and will probably be postponed further because of the rain.
The Girls Lacrosse Team went up against Needham on Saturday June 2 to determine placement for next round of tournament. Unfortunately, The Rebels lost to Needham during undesirable weather conditions, but played a tough-fought game. Taking into consideration that Needham is the number one team in the league, the Rebels had done fairly well against such a strong team in past games. In Needham’s first round of tournament, they played Whitman-Hanson Regional School, and beat them 17-3. Needham’s overall record is 20-1, compared to Walpole’s record of 11-7. The final score was 15-5, faring through various missed shots and fouls. The last time the Rebels faced Needham, they lost 17-9 so this game was sure to pose a challenge for Walpole. In the end though, the team played tough but fell to the number one team.
The MIAA All State meet will be held on Tuesday, June 5 at Fitchburg State University. Walpole has four elite athletes competing for one last time before New Englands (pending on qualification) in the 2012 spring track and field season. Junior PJ Hayes is seeded third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.91. Hayes has run faster with a 10.73, which is tied with the number on seeded athlete from King Philip, Charles Ruffin. The Hayes and Ruffin matchup has become a rivalry as the two have squared off with one another in previous races. Hayes got the best of Ruffin in the 55m Division II Finals, but Ruffin avenged that loss with a win in the 100m Division II Finals. Senior Conor Murtaugh is competing in the 110m hurdles, and is the fifteenth seed, with a time of 15.35 seconds. Senior Erin McCarthy, will compete in the 200m dash, seeded 12. At the Division II State Meet, McCarthy had a PR in the preliminary rounds, with a 25.94 in the. Even though McCarthy is seeded with a 26.16, from the finals, she should be able to pull out another 25 second PR and hopefully place top 8. Junior Maddy Shea is not running at the All State Meet, but is competing in the long jump. Shea jumped her season best last week of 17-00.50, and is the eleventh seed.
After losing their last two games of the season to Norwood and Dedham, Walpole Softball (ranked #15) had a huge victory in their preliminary round against Norwood on Thursday. They now advance to the the first round against Bridgewater-Raynham (ranked #2), whom they previously lost to early on in the season 4-1. In their second meeting Walpole came back with a 3-2 win. The much anticipated game was to be played at Bridgwater-Raynham High Scho0l on Saturday, but was postponed to Today at 3:30, once again not looking promising due to the rain throughout the day.
