The Walpole Rebels faced off against the Braintree Wamps last Friday, winning by a whopping score of 47-0. The game was highlighted by the Rebels potent offense, led by junior quarterback Will Bolster, who threw for 2 touchdowns and over 100 yards in his first career varsity start, and senior captain Mike Rando ran for one touchdown on the ground and received two through the air. Equally impressive, the Rebels defense allowed zero points along with forcing two interception and one fumble recovery.
The game began with the Rebels defense starting on the field, and just as the rest of the game would play out, the defense stymied the Wamps offense allowing Braintree to get nowhere. After the defense caused an initial Braintree punt, the Rebels offense took the field, led by their first-year starting quarterback, junior Will Bolster, and quickly took the field. In what seems like no time at all. they were back on the sidelines as Bolster threw a 51-yard bomb to Mike Rando for a touchdown on the first offensive play from scrimmage. The game had potential to be even more of a blowout than it eventually would become—by halfway through the second quarter, senior captains Cam Hanley and Rando both had rushing touchdowns and Bolster had thrown for another touchdown to senior receiver Aidan Lancaster. After Bolster’s TD pass to Lancaster, the junior was taken out, allowing for senior second-string quarterback Jared Porack to earn some valuable game experience early in the season. Bolster would finish 6 for 7 for 108 yards and 2 touchdown passes.
With Porack getting his shot to play with the starters, he impressed many, throwing for a touchdown to… You guessed it—Mike Rando, giving the Rebels a 34-0 lead at halftime. The second half brought similar results, yet this time it was the Rebels backups and junior varsity players playing offense and defense rather than the teams starters. Getting their shot to prove themselves against some of the Wamps starters, the Rebels backups continued to dominate the game, scoring two more times giving the Rebels a 47-0 lead as well as keeping a goose-egg on the scoreboard not allowing the Wamps to score. Overall, the Rebels impressed many early skeptics with their dominating win, but this was an inferior team in comparison to the Rebels, so expect a closer matchup against the high powered offense of the Framingham Flyers, who specifically gave the Rebels a scare last season putting up 20 points in the first half before the Rebels pulled out a 30-20 victory, this Friday September 14 at Turco Field.
