The rain came down hard on both Tuesday October 2, and Thursday night October 4 as the Walpole Girls Soccer Team took the field against Natick and Weymouth, respectively. The Rebels were looking to come out strong in both games and get a win in both games to improve their 2-3-3 record. However, they ended up with a 1-1 tie against Natick and a 2-0 loss against Weymouth. Head Coach Erin Kearney said, “We are not the kind of team that our record shows. We are better than that.”
The Rebels were looking to redeem themselves from their 3-3 tie in the first game of the season against Natick. The girls were convinced they werea different team then they were the first time around. The Rebel’s defense managed to hold off Natick’s offense until halfway through the second half when freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown punched a hard shot on the outside by Natick but was put right back in, this time to the back of the net, by a Natick offensive player. Walpole, determined to score, finally put one up on the board as Senior Captain Seana Cofsky took a free kick that bounced around in the box and was tapped into the net by sophomore Steph Lund.
Against Weymouth, the Rebels held off the Wildcats until there were twenty minutes left. Unfortunately for Walpole, in these twenty minutes Weymouth buried two goals in five minutes. The Rebels were not able to recover from this crippling blow though they managed to keep the ball mainly in Weymouth’s defensive end for the rest of the game.
Senior Captain Ella McMackin and many others of the Rebels offense had many other opportunities but failed to capitalize on them in both games. Walpole fought hard both games but its important to put those games behind them as they prepare to face Wellesley and Framingham. Both teams will be a challenge but “rebsoc” looks forward to bring some upsets to these two talented teams.
