Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer, despite their less than stellar seasons, are still fighting to qualify for the postseason tournament. The next few games are absolutely critical for these two teams as they bid to reach the state tournament and turn around these mediocre seasons. The girls have a record of 4-5-5—two wins away from making the tournament—while the boys have a record of 7-7-1—one win, and one tie away from making the tournament.
The Girls Soccer team faced Milton on Tuesday, October 16, and the came out on top. They beat Milton 2-0 after a 2-1 loss earlier in the season. Senior Captain Seana Cofsky set the Rebels on a roll with a goal early in the second half. This was followed up, five minutes later, by a cross into the box where Milton’s keeper tried to punch the ball away, but sophomore Steph Lund was able to tap the ball past her into the net for a second goal. The Rebels focused mostly on defense for the rest of the game but still managed to create offensive opportunities that almost resulted in another goal. In contrast, the boys beat Milton earlier in the season by a score of 2-1; yet, this time around, the Wildcats managed to score in the last five minutes, leaving the boys with a 1-0 loss. However, they did not lack offensive opportunities; juniors CJ Weinacht and A.J. Chauvin hit the crossbar and the post, respectively.
While the girls faced off against the Herget Champs, Dedham, on Thursday October 18, the boys played the Dedham Boys’, who are at the bottom of the Herget division. The girls’ tied 0-0. Head Coach Erin Kearney said concerning the tie: “We dominated one of the best teams in the league and did not allow the only thing that could prevent us from making it to the postseason.” With the help of senior John Lochead, juniors Bobby Ivatts and A.J. Chauvin—who all had goals—the boys won 4-1, gaining much needed points.
Currently, the girls are 4-5-5 and the boys are 7-7-1. The girls need to win 2 more games while the boys only need a win and a tie. However both teams have three more games. Next week, both teams will face Norwood and Braintree and while the girls face Franklin—who are ranked third in the state—on Monday October 29, the boys play Bishop Feehan on Saturday October, 27.
