On Wednesday December 16, the Walpole High School Music Department, headed by Michael Falker, put on their annual winter holiday concert. With five separate performance groups – showcasing what they have been working on for upward of three months now – the show ran for about 2 hours. The band opened up with “And the Herald Angels Sang” by James Swearingen, blowing the audience away with outstanding dynamics and incorporating holiday favorite such as “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.” Second to perform was the Jazz Choir – a select chorus headed by Mrs. Linda Maccini Pavloff – who sang a medley of holiday favorites. The last song – “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” – was sung with some help from the audience and Jazz Choir Alumni who were asked to join the Jazz Choir on stage. Last before intermission was the Jazz Band – a select band headed by Mr. Daniel McKenzie who did “One Note Samba” showcasing Seniors Brian Connolly, who plays the alto sax, and tenor sax Katie Landry. With freshman alto sax player Nicole Torigian also playing a solo, the Jazz Band engaged the audience in their piece. The Jazz Band also played “Nardis” by Miles Davis and “In The Doghouse” by Eric Morales which had the audiance swaying in their seats. The concert picked back up with Concert Choir singing five songs including an intricate acapella piece called “Ding-a-Ding-a-Ding” by Greg Gilpin and slower tune called “A Long Way From Home” arranged by Ruth Elaine Schram, with violin accompaniment by senior Amanda Higgins. The last song the Concert Choir performed was “Witness” by Dick Bolks which was an upbeat song full of difficult entrances and very nice harmonies. Closing the show was the Orchestra, who did an outstanding job with their two pieces “Overture to Rienzi” and “Yorkshire Ballad.” The Music Department showcased their incredible talents in the winter concert and will be practicing immensely as they approach their next performance.
