The Walpole Varsity Cheerleading team attacked their first competition of the season on Sunday, October 21st at Milford Highschool. The team has been practicing since the begining of the summer for competitions. Months and months of hard work had to be proven in a 2 minute and 30 second strenous and packed routine. This competition was an invitational competition, which means it does not count towards the league. These invitational competitions are held by any highschool that wants to hold one and invite cheerleading teams from near by to compete against each other. Competitions like this one are mostly used to prepare the teams for the important league competions such as Bay States, Regionals, and States. Walpole competed in Division 2 against Dracut, Blackstone Valley Tech, Nauset, Hopkinton, and Nipmuc.
Despite a few mistakes and tumbling busts Walpole still placed 2nd behind Dracut and scored an 81 with a 2 point penalty deduction for landing a round-off back-tuck off the mat. Last fall, at the same competition Walpole placed third behind Dracut and Hopkinton, scoring a 74.75. Evidently, Rebels have made huge improvements since last fall season, increasing their score by 6.25 points and overtaking Hopkinton by 3.75 points to clinch the second place trophy. The score to move on to States and Nationals is an 80 once the team makes it to Regionals, which the Rebels have already scored in their first competition. If the girls can continue to get scores like that they should not have a problem moving on to big competitions later in the season.
The team is working hard critiquing and cleaning up the mistakes they made during the Milford Invitational to prepare for Bay States on November 1 at Milton High School. They will be competiting for the Division 2 all girl Herget Title against Milton and competing for the Bay State Champions Title against all teams in the Bay State Conference .
