Coach Conor Cashman has high hopes for this upcoming winter season. Girls Indoor Track and Field had one of their most successful seasons yet last year with a record of 5-2 (including a victory over Wellesley for the first time in over ten years), but Cashman hopes to top last season by winning the Herget this year. In order to do this though, the team must beat Natick — a town they have never been able to beat.
Unfortunately, the team will be losing many key athletes including Lizzy Almeda, Natalie Doyle, Erin McCarthy, Christina Freiberger, and Savonna Small Brown (who moved to Framingham). Since many talented sprinters and throwers are being lost, many returning athletes and newcomers will have to step up for the team.
Fortunately though, there are still strong sprinters on the team including senior Captain Maddy Shea. Coach Cashman sees this years distance and mid-distance as a strength for this year’s team with junior Captain Gina Conti becoming one of the team’s leading scorers. Junior Kristen Coyne and senior Captain Megan Peterson are coming off of very successful Cross Country seasons with returning underclassmen who showed promising times and results during last year’s season. Coach Cashman is looking for individuals to step up to help fill in the gaps of those who will not return.
Conti said, “We especially need sophomores, like Lucy Lynch, Katie Flinn, and Allie Morris to grow like they did last year.”
Cashman said, “This year’s weakness will be depth in sprinting, shot put, and hurdles, but I have seen a lot of interest from our new members.” Specifically, Coach Cashman noted the importance of returning junior throwers Alexa Demarco and Ana Orfanidis to fill in for the absence of Lizzy Almeda and Natalie Doyle.
The Girls Indoor Track and Field team has high hopes for this upcoming winter season. Over the first few weeks of training, before the first meet, many individuals will have to be responsible to step up to fill in the empty gaps. Coach Cashman said, “We are going to take it one meet at a time.”
