After closing last year’s season with a record of 6-1, the Rebels won the Herget for the third year in a row. This year, Head Coach Kevin Butera hopes to lead the team to their fourth.
Butera said, “I am feeling pretty good about the upcoming season. The team has a lot of depth that will help score points.” This year’s team will be lead by senior Captains Kemble Lindh, Connor McCarthy, Kevin Delaney and Sean Herlihy.
Seniors PJ Hayes and McCarthy (both athletes who competed at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York) are the top returning point-scorers, so the team should be strong in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps; however, Butera is concerned about depth in all of these areas.
Much of the team’s strengths will come from the distance events where Butera said, “The depth is greatest.” Coming off a breakout Cross Country season, Herlihy—as well as Delaney—should lead the deep distance core to success.
Coach Butera said, “The struggle [with this team] will be the loss of identity.” Because of the loss of longtime teammates Zach Ganshirt, Feasty Conley, Justin Connolly, and Bryan Rockwood, Butera believes that it may take time for this young team to develop an identity.
In addition to finding their identity as a young team, the real weaknesses of the boys team will actually be depth in shot put and jumping.
In terms of season goals, Coach Butera said, “I would like to see the team win the Herget.” Coach Butera would also like to place extremely high at the Division II Meet, and the State Championship. Boys Indoor Track has some tough training ahead of them, but they have what it takes to have a successful season.
