Having faced the two hardest teams in the league to start out their season, the Walpole Girls Track Team left the Reggie Lewis Center with another disappointing loss with a final score of 51 to 35, against Natick on January 7.
Many of the points given up to Natick by Walpole were dropped in the last stretch. Natick held out many of our runners throughout the race, and then sprinted away at the end. This move was pulled on senior Amanda Waldron in the mile, and sophomore Christina Freiberger in the 1000m. However, junior Liz Jelloe did not fall for this trick, and gained Walpole 3 points by placing in the 1000m with a time of 3:27:33, about 7 seconds faster than the third place finisher. In the 600m race, Brigette Lawton, junior, just barely lost the foot race for first place to Natick runner Ally Ferrara by a split second, putting Brigette in second with a time of 1:52:87, a new personal record for her in this winter season. When it came time to run the two-mile, junior Courtney Shea, had mentally and physically prepared herself all week to face the top Natick two-mile runner. Shea was able to finish first place in the two mile with a time of 12:34.91, just in front of Natick’s Ellie Holman, who finished at 12:35.12.
For the Sprinters, senior newcomer, Alicia Tosone, finished third in the 300m, her first time ever running this event. (47.08) Freshman Nicky Browne, finished second in her 55hurdle race, .01 seconds behind Natick’s Adele McKiernan. In front of these girls was superstar senior, Erika Hawley, who finished first in 55m hurdles (9.33), and first in 55 dash, (8.01). Following Hawley in the dash, was junior newcomer Jackie Clinton, who set a personal record 8.24 and placed third. Many of the other sprinters that competed at this meet , most of which are freshman, are still trying to find their place on this team—trying out different races and events to see which ones they are best at.
The field aspect of the meet contributed to a total of 11 points for the Rebels. Hawley placed second in shot put with a throw of 8.50m. She also finished first in high jump (1.54m), followed in second place by junior Courtney Shea (1.34m).
Many runners achieved their personal record for the season during this meet, inlcuding seniors, Alicia Tosone in the 300m (47.08), Alex Barmakian in the shot put (6.57), Erica Hawley in the dash (8.01), 55m hurdles (9.33), shot put (8.50m), and the high jump (1.54m). Juniors, Brigette Lawton in the 600m (1:52.87), Colby Nadeau in the mile (6:15.30), Taylor Gilmore in the 55m hurdles (12.93), Jackie Clinton in shot put (6.99m), and Courtney Shea in high jump (1.34m), also had personal records this week. For the underclassman on the team’s personal records, there is sophomore Paola Yerxa in the 1000m (3.44.91), and freshman Nina Tobin in the 300m (48.17), Mary Reedy also in the 300m (50.81), and Megan Peterson in the 600m (2.10.16).
After this loss, the Walpole Girls Track team’s eager minds and legs for a win, are now ready to compete against Dedham next Thursday, who is also 0-2 on their season. With only 3 meets total left in the season, the Rebels performance against Milton and Norwood will define their success for this winter season.
