With new coach Katie Sullivan, Walpole Gymnastics hopes to have a fresh start this year. Walpole Gymnastics had a tough season last year with a losing record of 0-12 — scraping by with only six healthy athletes. However, senior Captain Caitlin Bryne and junior Captain Olivia O’Hara have high hopes for the upcoming season. Walpole Gymnastics has five returning members from last year and an additional eight new gymnasts who look to help the team improve their record.
Last years’ gymnastics team suffered from a lack of gymnasts and it resulted in a frustrating season. While Walpole barely had enough girls to compete in each event, many teams had around three to five times more gymnasts on their team then Walpole. However, despite the teams’ record they still worked very hard and managed to put up impressive scores for a team with so few girls. Olivia O’Hara even had the honor of being awarded BSC League All Star.
The team has many returning athletes who are expected to have gained confidence and skills from last year, which will be very beneficial to the team. Walpole Gymnastics is also adding new talented freshman.
When asked about the upcoming season Byrne said, “ I hope that the team will win a few more meets this season.” But more importantly, she hopes that the team “will have the best team spirit and a strong bond.” O’Hara feels the same way and said that she hopes “the team can work together and have a stronger team than last year.”
While last year was a rebuilding year for the Rebels, they are already making improvements. The team is gaining eight new gymnasts and with a total of thirteen gymnasts the rebels will hopefully be able to be competitive and win some meets this year.
