Walpole Girls Indoor Track started off the season strong on Thursday December 13 against Dedham. The Rebels defeated Dedham 70-25. Four athletes set new personal records to help contribute to the win, and make the team’s record 1-0.
The meet started off with a sweep for the Rebels in the mile. Sophomore Allie Morris stepped up big for Walpole taking first place with a time of 6:02. Behind Morris, sophomore Lucy Lynch finished in second place reaching a time of 6:15. Freshman Julia Averill completed the sweep for Walpole. Averill scored her first varsity points by taking third place with a time of 6:24. Senior Danielle Levya PR’d in the mile with a time of 6:56.
Following the mile on the track, Walpole also swept the thousand meter race. Senior Megan Peterson led junior Megan Jenkins to take first and second at 3:27 and 3:30. Senior Micaela Barry stole third place with a time of 3:42. Junior Nikki D’Andre PR’d in the thousand with a time of 4:00. In the 600 meter race, junior Gina Conti took second place with a time of 1:43. New comer, sophomore Molly Lanahan took third place reaching a time of 1:55. To complete the races on the track, running the 300 meter race was two new comers junior Helena Ford and freshman Nicole Tobin. They placed first and second and both athletes scored their first varsity points crossing the finish line at 47.81 and 48.17.
In the two mile, the Rebels were able to sweep the race one again. Junior Kristen Coyne took first place for Walpole with a time of 12:25. In second place, junior Ashley Waldron finished at a time of 12:48. Behind Waldron, junior Mackenzie Wilson finished in third place to PR at a time of 13:03. The final event on the track, the 4×4 relay won the race with a final time of 4:34. The team consisted of Peterson, McMackin, Tobin, and Conti. Conti and McMackin ran the fastest spilts out of the four athletes.
Meanwhile, in the field, sophomore Ashley Levya finished in second place for high jump, jumping 4′ 3″. Levya scored her varsity points competing in high jump for the first time. The Rebels were able to sweep long jump. In first place, senior Maddy Shea jumped a distance of 16′ 1.5″. Freshman Hiromi Kondo took second place jumping 14′ 11.25″. To complete the sweep, sophomore Abby McMackin jumped a distance of 14′.
Unfortunately, in the shot put event the Rebels were unable to put any points towards their score, due to Dedham sweeping the event. In the 55 meter hurdles, sophomore Claire Rinne took second place for the Rebels with a PR of 10.41. To conclude the field events, in the 55 meter dash, Walpole took first and second place. Shea came in first with a time of 8.05. Kondo stole second place with a time of 8.07.
The Rebels started their season on a good note and hope to continue their success in the meet on Thursday December 20, against Milton. Despite the win, the girls still have improvement to make throughtout the season.
