Walpole High must’ve been on the nice list this year; Santa Claus made a special visit to Walpole High School more than a week before Christmas. On Monday December 17 and Tuesday December 18, Old Saint Nick visited the cafeteria to take pictures with and talk to the students of Walpole High during lunch block. Because the real Santa is up in the North Pole preparing for his big night on the 24th, we have to assume that this man was just a student dressed in a red suit and white beard. As one student quoted a nationwide favorite Christmas movie “Elf”, “he didn’t even smell like the real Santa;” however, the man in the suit is to remain a mystery to the majority of Walpole High.
Students had to pay one dollar per picture in order to pose with Santa. All money collected was donated to The Channel View School For Research, a secondary school originally in Queens, New York. However, due to the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, facilities had to be relocated to Brooklyn. The 150 dollars Walpole High School donated will be used to help students and their families of the Channel View School who are in need of books and school supplies. Any student who made a donation of more than a dollar was entered into a raffle for two Celtics tickets to a game in the early spring of 2013. Junior Katie LeBlanc was found to be the lucky winner of the tickets after the raffle drawing on December 19.
On the first day of Santa’s visit, he was followed around the cafeteria by student council members dressed in elf and candy cane costumes while he made conversation and took pictures with students at various lunch tables. However, the 18th found Mr. Claus waiting for students to approach him as he sat near the Snack Bar with student council members. Student Council member Jared Porack said, “I had a lot of fun hanging out with Santa at lunch! I wish he was here for more than just two days!” Another student, junior Remy Love said, “Santa really brightened up the cafeteria and put us all in the holiday spirit!” Although Santa did not attract a line out the cafeteria doors of students waiting for a photo, Student Council Advisor, Ms. Kerry McMennimen said, “the event was as successful as we had planned and Santa will most likely be back next year.”
