In an effort to spread some Valentine’s Day love, Walpole High’s National Honor Society chapter met Wednesday, February 3, and crafted some handmade cards. The Valentines will be sent to senior recipients of the Meals on Wheels program next week along with their meals. NHS focuses on improving and helping the community in many ways throughout the school year, and the card drive is only the latest endeavor they have taken on this year.

Walpole’s NHS chapter has been making cards for the program for years. All together this year, over 120 Valentines were sent to the program this year. NHS  Vice President Brian Connolly said that the group continues to donate cards to Meals on Wheels because “It reminds the recipients that someone is thinking about them on Valentines Day.”

Although no one individual benefits from NHS activities like the card drive, their efforts serve the community as a whole. Every year, seniors inducted into the society participate in various service activities both on their own and as a group.  So far this year, NHS has assisted and helped to run such events as Parent Teacher Conferences, Elementary School Math Nights, the Elm Street School Hoedown, and Freshman Orientation (to name a few). During these events, the large group can be easily spotted donning the classic blue t-shirts and leading tours, selling treats at the Walpole town meetings, and teaching their younger peers.

Next up, NHS plans to participate in another outreach project by raising money for the sick through Pennies For Patients. The group will begin collecting donations some time after February break. While NHS contributes significantly to Walpole schools, projects like the Meals on Wheels Valentine’s Day card drive and Pennies For Patients are special because they give NHS a chance to reach out to the surrounding community, make an impact outside of Walpole, and help those in need.
