Girls Track lost the chance of tying the Herget on Thursday, Janurary 24, by losing to Natick, 64-31. The girls’ record is now 3-2. Unfortunately, the girls did not perform as expected but some athletes did run personal best and score point for the girls. According to senior captain Megan Peterson, “It was a tough loss for the team but we still had some girls with great performances.”
To start off the meet, the mile took off with Natick’s Erin Murphy, leading the race running a 5:36 mile. Junior Kristen Coyne led the Walpole girls in the mile being Walpole’s first runner to cross the line at 6:00.42 taking second place. Senior Micaela Barry stepped up to take third place for the Rebels running the last half of the mile with Coyne. Barry crossed the line milliseconds after Coyne to PR at time of 6:00.81. The Rebels scored four points total in the mile. Following the mile, the Rebels were able to receive three points in the 1000 meter race. Peterson finished in second place for the Rebels running a time of 3:25. After the 1000, junior Gina Conti won the 600 meter race crossing the line at 1:42.13 to set a new PR. Behind Conti, junior Megan Jenkins finished to take third place for the Rebels with a time of 1:48.73 The Rebels were able to get six out of the nine points in the 600. Freshmen Nicole Tobin won the 300 meter race crossing the finish line at 46.15 seconds. Tobin scored five points for Walpole. To conclude the races on the track, junior Ashley Waldron stepped up to take second place running a PR of 12:32.92 Junior Mackenzie Wilson helped avoid Natick from taking third place by crossing the line at 13:12.58.
In the infield, senior captain Maddy Shea took second place, giving Walpole three points, running a PR of 7.88 seconds. Sophomore Claire Rinne was able to steal one point for the Rebels by receiving third place running 10.56 seconds. Unfortunately, Walpole’s high jumpers were unable to score points. Shea was able to come out on top in long jump taking first place jumping a distance of 15’ 11”. Completing all events of the night, in shot put, junior Ana Orfanidis took threw 25’ 3” for her to finish in third place.
Coyne said, “Losing to Natick was definitely tough for the team as a whole but it is a learning experience. It gives us more motivation to work to our full potential in the future meets against tough competitors.” On Thursday, January 31, the girls will be competing in their last meet before selected athletes, who qualified, move on into post season. The girls are competing against Needham, a Carey team. Shea said, “The Needham meet coming up will be tough competition, and everyone just needs to focus on doing the best they can.” The Rebels are hoping to put the two losses behind them to compete as the team they know they are for the last time as team on Wednesday.
