Beautiful Creatures, which came out February 14 fails to wow the crowd with its story of a family of witches and warlocks. The movie was created from a novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The gothic mystery centers around a witch (Lena Duchann) who must decide by her 16th birthday, whether or not she will be claimed by the dark or the light. However, like all supernatural movies that targets teenagers, there is a romance involved that could affect her decision. Ethan Wate, an outsider stuck in a small town is how we first meet the mysterious Lena Duchann. The two, both being outcasts, become interested in each other; however, Ethan does not know what he is getting himself into. Although the film is not well done, those who loved the Twilight franchise will love Beautiful Creatures as well. Just as Twilight disappears, this movie about love overcoming even the supernatural is ready to take its place. Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich who play Lena and Ethan do the best acting in the movie. These surprisingly not well-known actors do a convincing job. The others lack this quality. However, with the script they were given it is hard to be sincere.
Sadly it seems throughout most of the movie we are not learning much about the characters and their world. They only touch the surface of what it actually means to be a part of the dark or the light. Most of the time the viewer just watches a character from the dark side (whatever that means) and the light side fight over Lena. Also we know that Ethan and Lena’s relationship makes Lena more vulnerable to the dark side but we are never told why. Unfortunately, the movie lacks a lot of explanation and connections that would help the viewer better understand what is going on.
The film was directed by Richard LaGravanese who also wrote the script. The movie does not come across as that scary at any point in time, which is where it could use some major work. It is mainly a love story like all the others we may see in theaters today. Except the slight difference is the problems they are facing are a bit more out of the ordinary compared to couples in other movies. Even with the addition of the abnormal problems Beautiful Creatures fails to be anymore interesting than a typical love story. Despite its down falls, Beautiful Creatures will be able to attract a similar audience that of Twilights. That being mainly teenage girls. Although it will never be considered a great movie, because in the end it is not awful, but it is nothing special either.
