At the National Honors Society induction ceremony on May 15, seniors gave speeches about special educators that have impacted his or her life in a meaningful way. While most seniors recognized Walpole teachers or coaches, senior Sean Burchesky nominated Sal Kahn — a Bengali American entrepreneur who creates educational tutorials from his small house office. His free website, Khan Academy, consists of brief videos that help students further understand topics in math or science that they may not have fully understood in class.
The days of handwriting hundreds of flash cards and searching endlessly through textbooks are now in the past because of one major development: the internet. Compared to earlier generations when studying consisted of memorizing notes, re-writing vocab words over and over until they are in one’s head permanently, and hoping that one copied down all of his or her notes in class, today’s internet is full of engaging memorization tools and supplemental instruction. In terms of memorization, http://www.quizlet.com/ and https://conjuguemos.com/ are two of the sources that can take hours out of a student’s study time. Quizlet is a free website for both students and teachers that contains flash cards on almost any subject that either a student or a teacher could need. One simply searches a topic—for example, a Sadlier Oxford Vocabulary Quiz — and within seconds one will have a set of flashcards before him or her. From there, one has the option to either study online or print out the flash cards. As for additional instruction, http://www.khanacademy.org/ gives students access to over 4,100 videos that range from math, physics, and even history.
Khan Academy
Kahn’s videos were so influencial that Time Magazine named him one of the 100 most influencial people in the world. The site also has step by step practice problems to ensure that students fully understand the topic on which they are being tested. When users first enter the site, the first thing seen is the motto “Learn almost anything for free,” which is very true because Sal Khan does an outstanding job of teaching even the most difficult to understand topics. The site offers 4,100 videos in the categories math, science and economics, computer, humanities, and even test prep to help prepare for the SATs. Khan uses whiteboard screen casting to make his videos, which means he can efficiently and clearly write and show pictures to the students watching. The high level of technology used by Khan Academy is what allows thousands of high quality videos to be viewed for free across the world.
Quizlet
This site’s convenient setup offers tools and resources to help enhance students’ studying. Those who are not members of the website can still easily search the site for any topic in the search bar, but those who are members can create their own set of flashcards. Creating a set of flashcards is just as easy as searching for one on Quizlet because the site will auto-define the words for the users.
Sophomore Sabrina Dimartino said, “Quizlet has made studying easier because making the actual Quizlet makes me study since I have to type in all the terms and definitions. After that it’s really easy to just go on and study.” After creating a set, there is a choice between making the set private, giving access to certain users, or making it public for anyone to use.
Sabrina said, “I love that I can share my Quizlet sets with other people. It helps that my entire AP History class makes tons of Quizlets whenever we have tests, and it’s great being able to share each others’ because we all make them for different sections of the chapter. Being able to share them is really helpful and I think it overall improves all of our grades.”
For anyone simply learning words and their definitions, the “learn” option is perfect. “Learn” shows a definition and there is an area to type in the word. This section is effective for familiarizing oneself with the topics on an exam. There is also an option that supplies the word and there is a space to type the definition. At the end of a study session, it displays the percentage that were correct the first time, and it allows the user to continue until he or she has received a hundred percent. Even with a free account, there is an option for users to see their results the improvement. There is also a spelling section that allows users to spell the word as the definition is being read. Another great source is the online test that can be regenerated endlessly for as long as the user wants. The online test includes matching, multiple choice, and true or false questions.
For those who become bored with the straightforward study methods, there are even games to help one study: “Scatter” and “Space Race.” “Scatter” is a race against the clock game where the user matches words to their definitions, and “Space Race” is a similar game where the definition flies by and there is a space to type the correct word. While the games are generally lame in terms of enjoyment, they are much more entertaining and more effective than writing flashcards.
Conjueguemos
Although there is an option to study foreign language vocabulary on Quizlet, for a more language specific study source, Conjuguemos is a great site to learn verb conjugations. With many of the commonly studied high school languages — Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Latin, and German — Conjuguemos gives students practice on all verb tenses from the present, preterit, imperfect, and future tense with both regular, irregular, and even stem-changing verbs. To make the set of verbs more personal, students are able to pick and choose which verbs they would like to use.
Although constant use of the internet while studying may lead to distraction and unproductiveness, when on task, Quizlet, Conjuguemos, and Khan Academy are all great study sources for high school students. The websites allow students to stay organized and to familiarize oneself with any topic he or she is studying whether it be simple memorization or more in-depth topics. Today’s technology allows students to study more effectively with resources that were not available to older generations.

MathTV.com and Khan are both websites that can help students further understand material that they may miss in the classroom.
