Rebel softball has had an extremely inconsistent season thus far. They have slaughtered teams, been slaughtered by teams, and won or lost by merely one point. The outcome of the game all depends on the day and whether the team comes prepared to play or not. Most of the team’s difficulty is with batting. If some players show promise for the game and start out batting strong, the whole team starts hitting; however, as soon as a few players stop hitting, the whole team goes into a slump that they can never seem to get out of. The Rebels game against Middleboro on Friday, May 10, was a close one seeing as the Rebels won 1-0 yet again.
Senior pitcher Marissa Ryan set the stage for the game with a strike out to start the Rebel defense off. This inning contained two pop ups and one out of only three hits given up all game by Ryan. The Rebels stepped up to the plate and got one hit; however, this was followed by three quick outs. In the second inning, the Rebel fielders were unstoppable, allowing only three batters to step up to the plate and shutting them down one after the other. With one out in the second inning, senior captain Sam McChesney got a single and then stole second, putting her into scoring position. The next batter struck out, leaving senior captain Lauren Bodin up to bat with two outs. Bodin hit a single, causing McChesney to score, making it 1-0 before Bodin got out at second, ending the inning.
The score remained the same after this, with both teams never having more than four batters up each inning. The Rebels only earned one more hit after this inning and Middleboro only had two more earned hits. Although the Rebels hitting was not drastically improved, it improved enough for them to clinch the win against Middleboro, making their record 8-6. The Rebels will face Milton, Framingham, and Dedham in the upcoming week. The team needs only two more wins to obtain a tournament berth, so the Rebels are hoping for some wins this week.
