This fall on television, people around the country will tune in to watch new seasons of their favorite shows. Often, viewers discover that after the devastating finale of a final season, producers develop a new spin-off series to go along with the original show. Apparently, spin-off TV shows are the new fad for autumn 2013. One of the shows to have their own spin-off aired this fall is the CW’s hit show “The Vampire Diaries.” The spin-off, called “The Originals” premieres on Thursday October 3, 2013 after The Vampire Diaries and will air every Tuesday for the rest of the season.
“Vampire Diaries” fans have already had a taste of this new and upcoming show because the pilot was aired as a regular episode during season four of “The Vampire Diaries.” “The Originals” will focus on the Mikaelson siblings— Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt). The series is set in New Orleans, Louisiana and will contain elements of the original show that fans have come to know and love. In the back-door pilot, shocking pieces of information were revealed: Werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is pregnant with Klaus’ child, and Klaus is in a battle for kingship of New Orleans with his protege Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). His desire to assume this title stems from the fact that Klaus and his siblings are the ones who built New Orleans.
One may be thinking: “Why do successful TV shows create a spin- off?” Good question. The answer is simple: who the heck knows. Some of the main characters from the show are now leaving the original series to star in the spin-off— a descision that has left some fans outraged, for everyone familiar with the show knows Klaus and his siblings make “The Vampire Diaries” worth while. Most fans only watch the show for the Mikaelson siblings— not because of the whole Stefan, Elena and Damon love triangle.
Sometimes, spin-off series do not work out and the show either lives or dies. 90210 (2008) had that spin- off Melrose Place (2009-10) had low ratings so that show only lasted a seaon. Also, everyones favorite 90s cartoon Rugrats (1991- 2004) had their own spin- off All Grown Up (2003-2008) which lasted for five seasons. Furthermore, Keeping Up With The Kardashians (2007- present) has had three successful spin- offs to go along with the main show. Hopefully, “The Originals” will live on for many seasons. Some good questions to keep in mind while watching this new show are: Will there be crossover episodes like every other spin-off show has? What about Klaus and Caroline? “Klaroline” belongs together— every fan knows that! Overall, “The Originals” looks very promising and will (hopefully) be a great show to watch because “The Vampire Diaries” is getting plain old boring.
