Each year, Walpole High School plans many trips to different countries around the world. In the past, there have been trips to Germany, Costa Rica and China. The language department and history departments both offer a wide range of field trips and international trips. Now, for the first time at Walpole High School, the English Department has proposed the opportunity for students to travel to London, England.
The trip is scheduled for June 30- July 7, 2014 and there are twenty spots available. The trip is organized and chaperoned by two English teachers—Ms. Emily Loflin and Ms. Lisa Linden. The English department has never offered a field trip quite like this one, so both teachers are thrilled for the opportunity. The purpose of the trip is to enrich students’ knowledge of England, where most of the curriculum taught relates back to.
One of the trip organizers, Loflin said, “We chose London because we wanted to offer a literary and theatrical based trip for students. The Foreign Language Department and the History Department offer these wonderful trips that enrich students, so we thought it would be nice to see the English Department offer a trip that will enrich students in the English realm.”
“Ms. Loflin and I want to introduce students to British culture and history because it is rich and fascinating. It is also a way for us to make connections back to literature through events like experiencing theater as it was played in Shakespeare’s time, and visiting the famous pilgrimage destination, Canterbury Cathedral”, said Linden.
The information flyer highlights the many historic and famous landmarks that the group will visit throughout the week. A few of the sites the students will visit are: The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Shakespeare’s Globe theater, Hampton Court, The Prehistoric Sites of Avebury and Stonehenge, as well as two theatrical performances, and much more.
The interest for the trip is large considering how quickly the spots have been filled. In only the second week the trip has been advertised, the majority of spots have already been claimed by students committed to attending.
Linden said, “I hope students will have fun and expand their horizons and that the trip will foster curiosity about other places and cultures.”
