Girls Soccer started off their season with two tough opponents which caused problems for the young squad which gave them two straight losses to start the season. However, they did bounce back from this as they earned their first win of the season as they defeated Brookline.
During the first half of the game against Newton North after a long battle for forty minutes Newton North scored twice and senior Lauren Regan scored for Walpole leaving the score 2-1 at the half. Coach Erin Kearney pumped the girls up at halftime and reassured them that the game is not over yet. The Rebels went onto the field with positive attitudes ready to score another. The girls stayed strong and had many shot opportunities on net during the second half. The score remained 2-1 at the end of the heated forty minutes despite a good effort from the Rebels.
The Rebels showed up at Mansfield ready to play and very confident about the upcoming game as they were looking for their first win. The first half of the game was strong for both teams and the score ended 0-0 in the end of the first forty minutes. The second half Mansfield came out hard scoring two goals right after eachother. Off a penalty kick, junior Abby McMackin scored and put one on the board for the Rebels. However, Mansfield quickly stepped back up and scored another leaving the score at 3-1 for the remainder of the game.
Tuesday’s game against Brookline set the girls back on track. Coming out with intensity and keeping it up for the entire half is exactly what they did. Three goals were barreled into the back of the net throughout the half. Senior Lauren Reagan scored off a header in the very beginning to put Walpole on the board. During a corner kick junior Annie Gallivan, curved the ball into the net to bump the score up to 2-0. Near the end of the half sophmore Lisa Regan scored the third goal from the top of the eighteen. The main goal for the second half was to make sure scoring goals was not an option for Brookline. The Rebels achieved this goal until the final minute where Brookline put one past sophmore goalie, Kaitlin Brown. The team was still content with the winning score of 3-1.
Thursday’s game against Needham continued the girl’s success of getting better each game. After playing an extremely hard opponent, Newton North, they were then ready for the competition against Needham. The first half the girls came out with intensity and ready to bring it to Newton. During the first half junior Ashley Levya gave an assist to senior Karalyn Kickham to leave the the score at 1-0 at the half. The next forty minutes was all about defense and keeping Needham’s offense from having any goals. Until the last eight minutes Walpole was in the lead. Needham score off of a corner kick to tie the score at 1-1. The outcome of the game remained at 1-1 just how it had the previous year. Coach Erin Kearney was pleased with the girls 100% effort throughout the entire game.
