Girls Soccer went over into the very hostile town of Milton on Tuesday, September 24, to take on the formidable Herget rival. Milton team screamed and cheered in order to “pump themselves up,” but the holler did not phase Walpole, as they tied 1-1.
Senior Captain Lauren Regan and junior Ashley Levya started off with possession of the ball up front and immediately sent it off to senior Karalyn Kickham. However, neither team could get anything started as both teams went into halftime without recording a goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, Milton scored a goal, but Walpole did not let up. The Rebels continued to win balls in the air and take advantages of all the opportunities that they were given. Walpole had a corner kick and Kickham quickly distributed the ball in the air that senior Michelle Lucas redirected into the net to tie the score at 1-1. In the remaining minutes of the game Walpole’s intensity hit the roof, trying incredibly hard to get another goal to win the game but the opportunities were stopped and the game ended with a 1-1 tie.
On Thursday, September 26, Walpole took on highly ranked Dedham on Turco Field. Dedham was undefeated heading into the game, so each player on Walpole knew they had to give 110% throughout the entire 80 minutes of the game. Walpole shut down Dedham’s offensive immediately with their ability to win every ball in the air and contain every attack. Offensively, the opportunities were there, but the girls could not finish.
The Rebels dominated the first half, being first to every ball and winning them in the air. Walpole shut down Dedham in the offensive third, so the half ended in nail-biting 0-0 tie.
The next half the team played harder than ever, using their confidence and speed to their ability they had many on net chances. In the final seconds of the game, the girls knew that it was their final chance. Finally, the whistle blew and the game ended with the score of 0-0.
Senior Captain Abbey Smith said, “I am happy with the outcome of the game and I am very proud of all of my teammates who gave every minute their all no matter how tired we all were by the end. We definitely wanted the win, but a tying a team that is undefeated is a good feeling too.”
The girls take on Norwood and Weymouth this week.
