At the end of last school year,elections were held for the 2013-2014 sophomore, junior and senior Student Council representatives. A few weeks ago, the elections for the freshman class representatives were held during homeroom. There were twenty-seven candidates, and eleven were elected to the council. The freshman representatives are already very involved in the school community, as well as programs and activities outside of the school community.
The elected freshman are:
Lauren Bean- Lauren plays on the Freshman Volleyball team and plans on trying out for the basketball team in the winter, as well as the lacrosse team in the spring.
Sophia Giovanniello- Sophia plays field hockey during the fall season, and she also plays basketball and lacrosse.
Elyse Good- Elyse is also on the Freshman volleyball team and she rides horses outside of school.
Alison Foley- Alison plays on the JV girls soccer team throughout the fall, and she additionally plays on a club lacrosse league. Alison plans to try out for the basketball team this upcoming winter, and also the school’s lacrosse team in the spring.
Audrey Lynch- Audrey Lynch plays field hockey during the fall, and she is also planning on trying out for the basketball team during the winter.
Morgan O’Brien- Morgan currently plays volleyball, and she also plays basketball and lacrosse.
Tess Erwin- Tess plays on the JV soccer team in the sweeper position. Tess also plays basketball, lacrosse and club soccer. Erwin said, “I joined student council because I heard it is fun and hope to make a difference in the WHS community.”
Emily O’Connell- Emily plays soccer for the girls’ freshman team as well as basketball and lacrosse.
Taylor Petrucci- Taylor Petrucci plays on the freshman volleyball team.
Ashley Drummey- Ashley Drummey plays field hockey during the fall and plans to try out for lacrosse in the spring. Drummey said, “I hope to make a lot of friends on the council, and also help the school community.”
Grace Sewell- Grace is on the school’s swim team and also plays softball in the spring.
Melanie Weber- Melanie is on the Varsity Field Hockey team and is one of the team’s leading scorers. As a freshman, she is the starting center position on varsity. Additionally, Melanie plays basketball and lacrosse.
The freshman were able to see what Student Council is all about at the lock-in, an annual event held to welcome the new members. Weber said, “I really enjoyed the lock-in and hope to raise a lot of money for the school throughout the year by planning events and also to improve the WHS community.” The majority of the events Student Council plans either benefit the school or a specific charity. The Pink Dance benefits the American Cancer Society, the cost of tickets for the winter ball and semi-formal dance help fund for the venue, food and decorations, and money raised at Girls Night Out gets donated to the Fairy Godmother Project. Specifically, the freshman will help along with the rest of the council in planning the Winter Ball and their freshman semi-formal dance in June. The freshman are looking forward to their year on student council and making steps to improving the school community.
