By the end of November, many people have similar thoughts running through their heads: Thanksgiving, snowy weather, and football. As one of America’s favorite sports, football is a widely viewed television event during Thanksgiving; however, Walpole citizens are able to enjoy a football game before the fourth Thursday of November.
Every fall, the Walpole High School Student Council gives junior and senior girls the opportunity to play in a Powder Puff football game. This year, the game will take place on Wednesday, November 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forekicks in Norfolk. Sign-ups have taken place, with about 40 juniors signing up and only about 15 seniors filling positions.
A practice will be held on Monday, November 25 from 3 to 4 p.m. at Forekicks to prepare the upperclassmen girls for an intense competition. The junior and senior teams will be coached by WHS faculty members Mr. Michael Alan and Mr. William Hahn respectively. Last November, Alan led his team of seniors to a victory over the juniors, coached by Mr. Conor Cashman, with a score of 22 to 12.
The class of 2014 hopes to make up for last year’s loss and beat the current junior class. Among the strong returning senior players is Michele Lucas and Lauren Regan, who played well for the junior class in last year’s game. Scoring an early touchdown last year, Regan is a major force threatening the class of 2015.
On the other side, the large team of juniors consists of various athletes who could be tough competition for the senior class. Junior Emma Sewell said, ¨I think this year’s junior class will put up a decent fight against the seniors. Both classes have strong athletes, so I think it will be a close competition.¨
Despite the historically prevalent victory for the senior class, the class of 2015 will try to prove themselves as true competition against the current seniors in the annual Powder Puff game on Wednesday.
