On October 30, most of New England and the rest of the country saw the Boston Red Sox clinch their third World Series title in nine years against the Saint Louis Cardinals in the nation’s most beloved ballpark, Fenway Park.
By Growing up in New England, it is not hard to notice that Boston fans are some of the most die-hard fans in all of the country. Kids grow up dreaming about playing for their favorite Boston sports team whether its the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins or Red Sox.
This year Boys Hockey had the opportunity to live their dream of playing where the Red Sox play and where the Bruins beat the Flyers in 2011 in the Winter Classic: Fenway Park. The Rebels were picked from an array of teams to play in this unique atmosphere which they took on Stoneham in a scrimmage on December 30.
Aside from the game, which senior Ryan Brown scored the lone goal for the Rebels as it ended in a 1-1 tie, the team had a once in a lifetime opportunity. Before the game the team had the chance to explore the Red Sox clubhouse and walk around Fenway Park.
Senior Brendan Sullivan said, “My favorite part of Frozen Fenway was just walking around Fenway. It was very exciting knowing I was on the same field the Red Sox play on.”
Many players agree with Sullivan realizing that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, one of the most exciting parts of the day did not happen until their game was over. After their game, all of the players and coaches got to meet Red Sox’s legend David Ortiz.
Senior Captain Pat Baker, who loves David Ortiz, went as far to say: “The clear cut best part of Frozen Fenway was meeting Big Papi after the game. It was awesome to talk to him.”
To add to the experience, Frozen Fenway had more of a pond hockey feel to it rather than your typical hockey game. For just about everyone on both sides, this was the first time players have played an organized hockey game outside. Players took advantage of this by wearing eye black, something they have never worn during a normal hockey game.
Boys Hockey enjoyed the great opportunity of playing in the nation’s most historic ball park as everyone had a positive experience. However, the team knows that Fenway is the last destination they want to play in as they hope to play at Harvard in lieu of a State Championship run.
