With his Spanish accent, good looks, salsa moves and undying devotion to his daughter, Juan Pablo makes a very eligible bachelor at age 32. After being sent home from “The Bachelorette,” he now continues his search for love on season 18 of ABC’s “The Bachelor.” The second episode, “Dog Adoption Photo Shoot,” aired on January 13. In this episode, the 18 remaining bachelorettes moved into the mansion with hopes that they will end up as Juan Pablo’s soul mate and future wife. Drama ensued as Juan Pablo took two girls out on the first one-on-one dates and 13 girls out on the first group date.
The first one-on-one date went to Clare, who decided to show up “seven months pregnant” in the first episode. Juan Pablo blindfolded Clare and she found out why his note to her said “Let’s chill,” when he revealed an artificial winter wonderland right in the middle of Los Angeles. The two went sledding and ice skating, even though it was obvious that Clare couldn’t skate. In the hot tub, Clare stripped to a bikini, gave Juan Pablo a back rub and opened up about her dead father. She and Juan Pablo have a great time, and Clare was rewarded with a rose. After just one date with Juan Pablo, Clare acted lovestruck and said that he could be her “future husband.”
Kat, a dancer from Arizona, scores the second one-on-one date. Juan Pablo drove kat to an airport, where they cuddled on a plane and he led her to a surprise destination. Juan Pablos set a very romantic mood during the flight, so imagine Kat’s surprise when he brought out neon running outfits for the two of them. Their final destination was a 5k Electric Run in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kat’s date is that she gets to go jogging in full make-up and new sneakers. She manages not to throw up or have a temper tantrum, and Juan Pablo gives her a rose. Kat declares that “there is electricity in the future” for them.
For the group date, Juan Pablo took 13 of the girls to a photo shoot where they posed with dogs to help them get adopted. Elise, a school teacher, and Andi, a prosecutor, were assigned costumes that were nothing more than carefully-placed cardboard signs. Elise smartly talked Lucy, the always-nude “free spirit,” into swapping costumes, while Juan Pablo convinced Andi to strip down for the cause. After many pictures of girls in bikinis and the nude shots of Andi and Lucy with Juan Pablo, the rose went to Kelly, who was completely transformed into a dog. She was a good sport and handled her transformation well, which isn’t surprising considering the charity helps dogs, and she brought her dog Molly onto the show with her.
At the cocktail party after the photoshoot, things got a little crazy. Cassandra told Juan Pablo that she has a son, which gave her a leg-up in the competition because he is looking for a mom for his daughter Camila.
Victoria, a legal assistant, had too much to drink and immediately became the center of attention. She started crying and said that being on the show was too hard and she can’t handle it. Then, Victoria locked herself in the bathroom and would not let anyone talk to her. Renee, the other single mother on the show, tried to do the impossible and comfort Victoria. However, her attempts were futile because Victoria could not be consoled. She yelled at the camera men and security guards and demanded to go home. Concerned for her safety, they told her she cannot leave the building, so she went back to the bathroom, where Juan Pablo tried to talk to her but she did not let him.
Juan Pablo retreated to a safe distance, asking the girls to clean up the mess and make sure Victoria got home safely, a move that caused Chantel to call him a gentleman. Chantel obviously wasn’t paying attention on the group date because although Juan Pablo may have handled the Victoria situation well, he did nothing for the women who were pressured into getting naked on television.
The next morning, Juan Pablo went to Victoria’s hotel room and she apologized, but he reminds her that he needs a mom for his daughter, and her behavior was inappropriate. Subsequently, Juan Pablo sent Victoria home, then headed back to the mansion to spend more time with the girls before the rose ceremony.
Charleen apologized for being ungrateful when she received the first impression rose, but when she accepted her second rose she said “Sure,” which didn’t sound very appreciative. Cassandra was in tears because she wasn’t sure if being on “The Bachelor” was worth being away from her son. With some encouragement from Juan Pablo and fellow mom Renee, she decided it was, at least for now.
Amy, a reporter, has a fake interview with Juan Pablo, which doesn’t work well because she is sent home without a rose. Chantel is also sent home, which is unsurprising because she never had a shining moment on the show with Juan Pablo.
The next episode of “The Bachelor” airs tonight, January 20, at 8pm on ABC. Viewers will be watching to see who hits it off with Juan Pablo, as well as who is sent home. Tonight the girls will kick it up a notch and play a game of soccer, Juan Pablo’s favorite sport, to win a rose.
