Walpole High School hosted the Iron Chef Jr. competition —an event designed to challenge students and chefs to remake school food, showing that it is both versatile and healthy—on April 8. Four student teams headed by local chefs competed to be Walpole’s Iron Chef Juniors. Similar to the tv show “Iron Chef America,” each team incorporated a secret ingredient into their recipe: the sweet potato. Exploring the different uses of the vegetable, the teams cooked up desserts, entrees, and side dishes containing it. The four teams that competed were team Raven’s Nest, headed by chef Joe Gratton; team Jalepeños, headed by chef Rene Fernandez; team Conrad’s, headed by chef Claudio Dias; and a team led by the school’s in house chef Vinnie Cordon. Chef Joe Gratton led team Raven’s Nest to victory, winning an engraved saucepan and a cooking class for each of the students and a friend.[flagallery gid=18]
